Honoring World Mental Health Day (2025) in the Workplace

Few things will impact your mental health more than working in a toxic environment.

Maybe you've been doing your best working under a manager who will never give you credit for your work, but who may take your credit for themselves.

You may work in a department with people who make you feel uncomfortable taking time off to be present for obligations dealing with your children or family.

You may feel the effects of burnout and desperately need a day off, but know that you’ll be denied the time away. If you do get the time, maybe you'll be made to feel bad about it.

While being employed does support overall well-being, working in a toxic environment depletes your mental health.

According to research by the WHO, some risks to mental health at work include:
▪️excessive workloads or work pace;
▪️ under-use of skills or being under-skilled for work;
▪️under- or over-promotion;
▪️ job insecurity, inadequate pay, or poor investment in career development; and
▪️organizational culture that enables negative behaviors.

Don’t let anyone tell you these things are business as usual. They aren’t.

They’re impacting you on a micro level each day that you encounter them, whether you realize it or not.

Today, in honor of World Mental Health Day, reflect on all of it. Gain a new awareness of where you work, and how the things that happen there and the people you work with impact your mental health.

Know that it’s ok to rest; it’s ok to set boundaries; and if necessary, it’s ok to reconsider how and where you work.

Whatever you have planned today, I hope you find peace and clarity. And as a yoga teacher, of course, I’m partial to a good vinyasa or restorative yoga class to align the mind, body, and breath.

Let me know in the comments how you’re honoring yourself today. And if you support creating a well-being strategy for yourself or your workplace, DM me and let’s get started.
